Confession

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

O come, let us sing to the Lord;*
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Psalm 106

Praise the LORD.

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, *

for his faithful love endures forever.

Who can speak of the mighty deeds of the LORD, *

or proclaim all his praise?

Blessed are they who act with justice, *

who practice righteousness at all times.

Remember me, O LORD, with the favor of your people; *

O visit me with your salvation,

that I may see the prosperity of your chosen ones,

that I may rejoice in the joy of your nation, *

that I may glory with your inheritance.

Both we and our fathers have sinned; *

we have committed iniquity; we have acted wickedly.

Our fathers, when they were in Egypt, *

did not consider your wondrous works;

they did not remember the abundance of your mercies, *

but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.

Nevertheless, he saved them for his Name’s sake, *

that he might make his power known.

He rebuked the Red Sea, and it dried up, *

the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, *

and covered the company of Abiram.

A fire was kindled in their congregation; *

a flame burned up the wicked.

They made a calf in Horeb *

and worshiped a cast metal image.

They exchanged the glory of God *

for the image of an ox that eats grass.

They forgot God, their Savior, *

who had done great things in Egypt,

wondrous works in the land of Ham, *

and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.

So he said he would destroy them, *

had not Moses, his chosen one,

stood before him in the breach, *

to turn back his wrath from destroying them.

Then they despised the pleasant land, *

and gave no credence to his word.

They grumbled in their tents; *

they did not listen to the voice of the LORD.

Therefore he raised his hand

in an oath against them, *

to make them fall in the wilderness,

and to make their offspring fall among the nations, *

scattering them throughout the lands.

Then they yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor, *

and ate the sacrifices of the dead;

they provoked him to anger with their deeds, *

and a plague broke out among them.

Then Phinehas stood up and intervened, *

and the plague was restrained.

And it was counted to him as righteousness *

to all generations forever.

They angered him also at the waters of Meribah, *

so that trouble came to Moses on their account,

for they provoked his spirit, *

and he spoke rashly with his lips.

They did not destroy the peoples, *

as the LORD commanded them,

but they mingled with the heathen *

and learned to do as they did.

They served their idols, *

which became a snare to them.

They even sacrificed their sons *

and their daughters to the demons;

they poured out innocent blood, *

the blood of their sons and daughters,

whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, *

and the land was polluted with blood.

They were thus defiled by what they did, *

and were unfaithful in their deeds.

Then the anger of the LORD was kindled against his people, *

so that he loathed his own inheritance;

he gave them into the hand of the heathen, *

and those who hated them ruled over them.

Their enemies oppressed them, *

and they were subdued under their hands.

Many times did he deliver them,

but they were rebellious in their purposes *

and wasted away in their sin.

Nevertheless, he regarded their affliction, *

when he heard their cry.

For their sake he remembered his covenant, and relented *

according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

He caused them to be pitied *

by all who held them captive.

Save us, O LORD our God, *

and gather us from among the nations,

that we may give thanks to your holy Name *

and glory in your praise.

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, *

from everlasting to everlasting.

And let all the people say, “Amen.” *

Jeremiah 14

14 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought:

2   “Judah mourns,
    and her gates languish;
  her people lament on the ground,
    and the cry of Jerusalem goes up.
3   Her nobles send their servants for water;
    they come to the cisterns;
  they find no water;
    they return with their vessels empty;
  they are ashamed and confounded
    and cover their heads.
4   Because of the ground that is dismayed,
    since there is no rain on the land,
  the farmers are ashamed;
    they cover their heads.
5   Even the doe in the field forsakes her newborn fawn
    because there is no grass.
6   The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights;
    they pant for air like jackals;
  their eyes fail
    because there is no vegetation.

7   “Though our iniquities testify against us,
    act, O LORD, for your name’s sake;
  for our backslidings are many;
    we have sinned against you.
8   O you hope of Israel,
    its savior in time of trouble,
  why should you be like a stranger in the land,
    like a traveler who turns aside to tarry for a night?
9   Why should you be like a man confused,
    like a mighty warrior who cannot save?
  Yet you, O LORD, are in the midst of us,
    and we are called by your name;
    do not leave us.”

10   Thus says the LORD concerning this people:
  “They have loved to wander thus;
    they have not restrained their feet;
  therefore the LORD does not accept them;
    now he will remember their iniquity
    and punish their sins.”

11 The LORD said to me: “Do not pray for the welfare of this people. 12 Though they fast, I will not hear their cry, and though they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.”

13 Then I said: “Ah, Lord GOD, behold, the prophets say to them, ‘You shall not see the sword, nor shall you have famine, but I will give you assured peace in this place.’” 14 And the LORD said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds. 15 Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name although I did not send them, and who say, ‘Sword and famine shall not come upon this land’: By sword and famine those prophets shall be consumed. 16 And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, victims of famine and sword, with none to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, and their daughters. For I will pour out their evil upon them.

17   “You shall say to them this word:
  ‘Let my eyes run down with tears night and day,
    and let them not cease,
  for the virgin daughter of my people is shattered with a great wound,
    with a very grievous blow.
18   If I go out into the field,
    behold, those pierced by the sword!
  And if I enter the city,
    behold, the diseases of famine!
  For both prophet and priest ply their trade through the land
    and have no knowledge.’”

19   Have you utterly rejected Judah?
    Does your soul loathe Zion?
  Why have you struck us down
    so that there is no healing for us?
  We looked for peace, but no good came;
    for a time of healing, but behold, terror.
20   We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD,
    and the iniquity of our fathers,
    for we have sinned against you.
21   Do not spurn us, for your name’s sake;
    do not dishonor your glorious throne;
    remember and do not break your covenant with us.
22   Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain?
    Or can the heavens give showers?
  Are you not he, O LORD our God?
    We set our hope on you,
    for you do all these things.

John 6:27–69

27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” 28 Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” 30 So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

41 So the Jews grumbled about him, because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” 42 They said, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43 Jesus answered them, “Do not grumble among yourselves. 44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me—46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father. 47 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” 61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) 65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”

66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

The Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
