Confession

The confession is said privately. The audio file begins after confession.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

A brief silence is kept

Grant your faithful people, merciful Lord, pardon and peace; that we may be cleansed from all our sins, and serve you with a quiet mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, open our lips.
A And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
O O God, make speed to save us.
A O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
O Praise the Lord.
A The Lord’s Name be praised.
Everyone shall join in the following:

Venite
Psalm 95:1-7; 96:9,13

O come, let us sing to the Lord;*
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving*
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,*
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth,*
and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it,*
and his hands have molded the dry land.

O come, let us worship and bow down,*
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God,*
and we are the people of his pasture
and the sheep of his hand.
Today, if you hear his voice,*
do not harden your heart as in the rebellion.

O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness;*
let the whole earth stand in awe of him.
For he comes, for he comes to judge the earth*
and with righteousness to judge the world
and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Psalter

The appointed Psalm is read together

Psalm 78
Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; *
incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable; *
I will utter dark sayings of old,
things we have heard and known, *
things that our fathers have told us.
We will not hide them from their children, *
but tell to the generation to come
the glorious deeds of the LORD, and His might, *
and the wonderful works that He has done.
He established a testimony in Jacob *
and appointed a law in Israel,
which He commanded our fathers *
to teach to their children,
that the next generation might know them, *
the children yet to be born,
that they would arise and tell them to their children, *
so that they would set their hope in God
and not forget the works of God, *
but keep His commandments;
and that they should not be like their fathers, *
a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation that did not set its heart aright, *
whose spirit was not faithful to God.
The children of Ephraim, armed with the bow, *
turned back on the day of battle.
They did not keep the covenant of God, *
they refused to walk in His law.
They forgot His works *
and the wonders that He had shown them.
He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, *
in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan.
He divided the sea and led them through it, *
and made the waters stand up like a heap.
In the daytime He led them with a cloud, *
and all the night with a light of fire.
He split the rocks in the wilderness *
and gave them drink in abundance as from the great deep.
He brought forth streams from out of the rock *
and caused waters to run down like rivers.
Yet they sinned still more against Him, *
rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
They tested God in their heart *
by demanding food according to their desire.
They spoke against God, saying, *
“Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
Behold, He struck the rock so that water gushed out *
and the streams overflowed.
Can He also give bread *
or provide meat for His people?”
When the LORD heard this, He was filled with anger; *
and a fire was kindled against Jacob;
His wrath arose against Israel,
because they did not believe in God *
and did not trust in His salvation.
Yet He commanded the clouds above *
and opened the doors of the heavens,
and He rained down on them manna to eat *
and gave them the bread of heaven.
Man ate of the bread of angels; *
He sent them food in abundance.
He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens, *
and by His power He made the south wind blow;
He rained meat on them like dust, *
winged birds like the sand of the seas;
He let them fall in the midst of their camp, *
all around their habitations.
So they ate and were well filled, *
for He gave them their own desire.
But before they had satisfied their craving, *
while the food was still in their mouths,
the wrath of God rose up against them,
and killed the strongest of them *
and struck down the young men of Israel.
In spite of all this, they sinned yet more; *
despite His wonders, they did not believe.
So He ended their days in futility, *
and their years in sudden terror.
When He killed them, then they sought Him; *
they repented and sought earnestly for God.
They remembered that God was their rock, *
the Most High God their redeemer.
Nevertheless, they flattered Him with their mouths; *
they lied to Him with their tongues.
For their heart was not steadfast toward Him; *
nor were they faithful in His covenant.
But He, being merciful, atoned for their iniquity *
and did not destroy them;
Time after time He turned His anger away, *
and did not stir up all His wrath.
He remembered that they were but flesh, *
a wind that passes and comes not again.
How often they rebelled against Him in the wilderness *
and grieved Him in the desert.
They tested God again and again *
and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
They did not remember His power *
or the day He redeemed them from the enemy,
when He performed His signs in Egypt *
and His marvels in the fields of Zoan.
He turned their rivers to blood, *
and their streams, so that they could not drink.
He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, *
and frogs, which destroyed them.
He gave also their crops to the grasshopper *
and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
He destroyed their vines with hailstones *
and their sycamore trees with frost.
He gave over their cattle to the hail *
and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.
He let loose on them His burning anger,
wrath, indignation, and distress, *
a band of destroying angels.
He made a path for His anger;
he did not spare their souls from death, *
but gave their lives over to the plague.
He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, *
the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.
Then he led out his people like sheep *
and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
He led them on safely, so that they were not afraid; *
while the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
He brought them in to the borders of His holy land, *
to the mountain which His right hand had won.
He drove out the nations before them;
he allotted them their lands as an inheritance *
and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God *
and did not keep His testimonies,
but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; *
they twisted like a deceitful bow.
For they provoked Him to anger with their high places; *
and moved Him to jealousy with their idols.
When God heard this, He was filled with anger, *
and He utterly rejected Israel.
He abandoned His tabernacle in Shiloh, *
the tent where he dwelt among man,
and delivered His strength into captivity, *
His glory into the enemy’s hand.
He gave his people over to the sword *
and showed Himself angry with His inheritance.
Fire devoured their young men, *
and their maidens had no marriage songs.
Their priests fell by the sword, *
and their widows made no lamentation.
Then the Lord awoke as if from sleep, *
like a warrior overcome with wine.
He drove back his adversaries; *
He put them to everlasting shame.
He rejected the tent of Joseph; *
He did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
He chose the tribe of Judah, *
Mount Zion, which He loves.
He built His sanctuary like the high heavens, *
like the earth, which He has established forever.
He chose David His servant *
and took him from the sheepfolds;
from following the nursing ewes He brought him *
to shepherd Jacob His people,
and Israel His inheritance.
With upright heart he shepherded them *
and guided them with skillful hands.

The Lessons

A reading of the appointed lessons

Lamentations 4

  How the gold has grown dim,
    how the pure gold is changed!
  The holy stones lie scattered
    at the head of every street.

  The precious sons of Zion,
    worth their weight in fine gold,
  how they are regarded as earthen pots,
    the work of a potter’s hands!

  Even jackals offer the breast;
    they nurse their young;
  but the daughter of my people has become cruel,
    like the ostriches in the wilderness.

  The tongue of the nursing infant sticks
    to the roof of its mouth for thirst;
  the children beg for food,
    but no one gives to them.

  Those who once feasted on delicacies
    perish in the streets;
  those who were brought up in purple
    embrace ash heaps.

  For the chastisement of the daughter of my people has been greater
    than the punishment of Sodom,
  which was overthrown in a moment,
    and no hands were wrung for her.

  Her princes were purer than snow,
    whiter than milk;
  their bodies were more ruddy than coral,
    the beauty of their form was like sapphire.

  Now their face is blacker than soot;
    they are not recognized in the streets;
  their skin has shriveled on their bones;
    it has become as dry as wood.

  Happier were the victims of the sword
    than the victims of hunger,
  who wasted away, pierced
    by lack of the fruits of the field.

10   The hands of compassionate women
    have boiled their own children;
  they became their food
    during the destruction of the daughter of my people.

11   The LORD gave full vent to his wrath;
    he poured out his hot anger,
  and he kindled a fire in Zion
    that consumed its foundations.

12   The kings of the earth did not believe,
    nor any of the inhabitants of the world,
  that foe or enemy could enter
    the gates of Jerusalem.

13   This was for the sins of her prophets
    and the iniquities of her priests,
  who shed in the midst of her
    the blood of the righteous.

14   They wandered, blind, through the streets;
    they were so defiled with blood
  that no one was able to touch
    their garments.

15   “Away! Unclean!” people cried at them.
    “Away! Away! Do not touch!”
  So they became fugitives and wanderers;
    people said among the nations,
    “They shall stay with us no longer.”

16   The LORD himself has scattered them;
    he will regard them no more;
  no honor was shown to the priests,
    no favor to the elders.

17   Our eyes failed, ever watching
    vainly for help;
  in our watching we watched
    for a nation which could not save.

18   They dogged our steps
    so that we could not walk in our streets;
  our end drew near; our days were numbered,
    for our end had come.

19   Our pursuers were swifter
    than the eagles in the heavens;
  they chased us on the mountains;
    they lay in wait for us in the wilderness.

20   The breath of our nostrils, the LORD’s anointed,
    was captured in their pits,
  of whom we said, “Under his shadow
    we shall live among the nations.”

21   Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom,
    you who dwell in the land of Uz;
  but to you also the cup shall pass;
    you shall become drunk and strip yourself bare.

22   The punishment of your iniquity, O daughter of Zion, is accomplished;
    he will keep you in exile no longer;
  but your iniquity, O daughter of Edom, he will punish;
    he will uncover your sins.

Canticle

The Song of Zechariah
Benedictus Dominus Deus
Luke 1: 68-79

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;*
he has come to his people and set them free.
He has raised up for us a mighty savior,*
born of the house of his servant David.
Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies,*
from the hands of all who hate us.
He promised to show mercy to our fathers*
and to remember his holy covenant.
This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,*
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
Free to worship him without fear,*
holy and righteous in his sight
all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,*
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
To give his people knowledge of salvation*
by the forgiveness of their sins.
In the tender compassion of our God*
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,*
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.

John 13:1–30

13 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

The Creed

I believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
I acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Suffrages from The Trinity Mission Daily Prayers for Individuals & Families

Almighty Father, whose most dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it in thankful remembrance of Jesus Christ our Savior, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Let us bless the Lord.
A Thanks be to God.
O The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
