Compline
Prayer at Bed-time

Led by Fr. Michael Thorne Jarrett

Officiant Our help is in the Name of the Lord;
All The maker of heaven and earth.
Officiant Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God.
All Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Officiant Almighty Father, who for your great love of your creation did give your dearly beloved Son to die for us; Grant that through his Cross † our sins may be put away, and remembered no more against us, and that, cleansed by his Blood, and mindful of his sufferings, we may take up our cross daily, and follow him in newness of life, until we come to his everlasting kingdom; through the Name of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Officiant O God, make speed to save us.
All O Lord, make haste to help us.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The following Psalms are read

  Psalm 4

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness! *
You have relieved me in my distress;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer.
O children of men, how long shall my glory be turned into shame? *
How long will you love worthlessness and seek after lies?
Know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; *
the LORD will hear when I call to him.
Be angry, and do not sin; *
search your own hearts on your bed and be still.
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, *
and put your trust in the LORD.
There are many who say, “Who will show us some good?” *
let the light of your face shine upon us, O LORD.
You have filled my heart with greater joy *
than when their grain and wine abound.
I will lay me down and sleep in peace; *
for you alone, O LORD, make me to dwell in safety.

Psalm 134

Behold, bless the LORD, all you servants of the LORD, *
who stand by night in the house of the LORD!
Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, *
and bless the LORD.
May the LORD bless you from Zion; *
he who made heaven and earth.
  Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

A brief silence is kept.

The Lessons

The Lessons for Monday

May the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever.
Hebrews 13:20-21

A brief silence should be kept between readings.

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Romans 5:10-11

A brief silence is kept after the readings.
Please pause the service if you would like more time.

HYMN

Te Lucis

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That with Thy wonted favor Thou
Wouldst be our Guard and Keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
From nightly fears and fantasies;
Tread under foot our ghostly foe,
That no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
Through Jesus Christ, Thine only Son;
Who, with the Holy Ghost and Thee,
Doth live and reign eternally. Amen.

THE PRAYERS

Officiant Into your hands, O Lord, I commit my spirit;
All For you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth.
Officiant Keep me as the apple of your eye;
All Hide me in the shadow of your wings.
Officiant Lord, have mercy
All Christ, have mercy
  Lord, have mercy

All Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.
Officiant Lord, hear our prayer
All And let our cry come to you.

The Officiant prays one or more of the following:

O LORD, who has pity for all our weakness: Put away from us worry and every anxious fear, that, having ended the labors of the day, and committing our tasks, ourselves, and all we love into your keeping, we may, now that night is coming, receive from you your priceless gift of sleep; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of the night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen..

Visit this place, O Lord, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy; let your holy angels dwell with us to preserve us in peace; and let your blessing be upon us always; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen..

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.

Silence is kept and free intercessions or petitions may be offered
Then the Officiant continues saying

Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping, that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis
The Song of Simeon
Luke 2:29-32

Lord, now let your servant depart in peace,*
according to your word.

For my eyes have seen your salvation,*
which you have prepared before the face of all people;

To be a light to lighten the Gentiles,*
and to be the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world
without end. Amen.

Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping, that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.

The Officiant concludes with

The Almighty and Merciful Lord grant us a quiet night, and at the last a perfect end; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon us and remain with us this night, and for evermore. Amen.
